Getting the right harness fit is one of the most important things you can do for your dog's comfort and safety. A harness that's too tight can restrict breathing and cause chafing, while one that's too loose can allow your pup to slip out — which is dangerous on any walk.
Here's a simple step-by-step guide to measuring your dog correctly before you buy.
What You'll Need
- A soft measuring tape (or a piece of string and a ruler)
- Your dog's cooperation (treats help!)
Step 1: Measure the Chest Girth
This is the most important measurement. Wrap the tape around the widest part of your dog's chest — just behind the front legs. Make sure you can fit two fingers under the tape for a comfortable fit. Note this number in inches or centimeters.
Step 2: Measure the Neck
Measure around the base of your dog's neck where a collar would normally sit. Again, leave room for two fingers.
Step 3: Measure the Back Length
For some harness styles, you'll also need the length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.
Step 4: Check the Size Chart
Every harness brand has slightly different sizing. Always compare your measurements to the specific size chart for the harness you're buying. When in doubt, size up — most harnesses are adjustable.
Tips for a Perfect Fit
- Measure after a meal when your dog is relaxed
- Re-measure puppies every few weeks as they grow
- Check the fit regularly — weight changes affect harness sizing
- The harness should not shift side to side or ride up toward the neck
