Summer Safety Tips for Dogs

Summer Safety Tips for Dogs

Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors with your dog — but the heat brings real risks that every pet owner should know about. From scorching pavement to dehydration, here are the most important summer safety tips to keep your pup happy and healthy all season long.

1. Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car

Even on a mild 70°F day, the inside of a parked car can reach over 100°F within minutes. This is one of the leading causes of heat-related dog deaths. Never leave your dog unattended in a vehicle, even with the windows cracked.

2. Walk During Cooler Hours

Avoid walks during peak heat (10am–4pm). Instead, walk early in the morning or in the evening when temperatures are lower. This is especially important for small breeds and brachycephalic dogs (like Pugs and French Bulldogs) who overheat more easily.

3. Check the Pavement Temperature

If the pavement is too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws. Hot asphalt can cause painful burns in seconds. Stick to grass or shaded paths, or consider dog booties for protection.

4. Always Bring Fresh Water

Dogs need significantly more water in summer. Bring a collapsible bowl and fresh water on every walk. Offer water every 15–20 minutes during outdoor activities.

5. Watch for Signs of Heatstroke

Know the warning signs: excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or collapse. If you suspect heatstroke, move your dog to a cool area, apply cool (not cold) water, and get to a vet immediately.

6. Provide Shade and Ventilation

If your dog spends time outdoors, ensure they always have access to shade and fresh air. A well-ventilated space is essential — never leave dogs in enclosed outdoor kennels in direct sun.

7. Dress Smart for Summer
